Back when I covered the airline industry, we watched for certain signs that the carriers were in trouble.
One was when they re-negotiated agreements with credit card companies, who were vital to keeping passengers on planes. Another was if they issued a “going concern” letter, basically a heads up that restructuring might be a possibility.
None of these actions in and of themselves meant a crisis. It was when they began piling up that you need to take note.
